2017 New Year GoalsWe’re sure you and all your friends and family are creating New Year’s Resolutions for 2017, here at Shining Light we are setting some pretty exciting goals for ourselves as well. We hope to see so many more lives touched with hope this year, and we have very specific plans to see that happen…
If one of your goals for this year is to “give back”, get more involved with bringing peace internationally, or to be an advocate for issues that matter to you, here are just five of the things you can join us in for 2017. Together let’s see more children educated, more students go to college, more women receive employment skills…and more hope infused into the lives of our friends in Northern Pakistan.
Goal #1: Give 4 more students scholarships to further their education at the University level
Only 6-7% of Pakistani youth receive a higher education, but we know what transformation it can bring to an entire community, so we will continue to invest in Pakistan’s future leaders!
Goal #2: Establish a Retail Sales Outlet for the women employed at Life Stitch Manufacturing Center
The products that Life Stitch employees are creating are beautiful and we want to help get them in front of their local market! They are creating pillows, bedsheets, local dress, school uniforms, and more and we will help create a sustainable store front and source of income for Life Stitch.
Goal #3: Expand our Women’s Vocational Training Program to two additional Gujjar villages
We care deeply about the entire community of Gujjar’s, and strive to bring training and assistance to all areas that village leaders feel is needed. That’s why our student’s moms, grandmothers, and sisters, will soon have access to the basics of wool weaving, sewing, and knitting to provide much needed skills for the family and financial opportunities.
Goal #4: School will start this spring and Mother Tongue Literacy Programs will be received in Shashi Nallah
Funding was completed last fall to begin teaching 200 more children in this new valley of Gujjars, and we are so excited to see our new teachers and students empowered through education for the first time!
Goal #5: Complete Middle School Building with 4 Classrooms in the Gujjar Village of Gumsing.
Many of the rural Gujjar communities we work with express the need for further education for their daughters. In order to continue going to school, many students would have to travel or stay in boarding schools, and it is nearly impossible for the Gujjars, so in 2017 SLI will be constructing a 4 classroom middle school building so that girls can continue their education all the way through grade 8!
